Women Rock The Internet

What Does Your Business Have In Common With The Grammys?

by Andrea Cinnamond on February 17, 2012

Girl at ConcertYes, I watched the Grammy Awards Show to learn more about Whitney Houston’s life and music and yes, I watched it to see the fashion and yes, much to my surprise and glee, I bought a bunch of songs on iTunes as I watched the show.

But what most struck me about the show is the very wide variety of music that can come  from eight notes (and a few flats and sharps) and multiple octaves. I find it amazing that even after all the years that music has been around, there are still new things that can be done, new beats, new rhythms, new and different voices. Each musician works within their gifts, their talents and their life stories. They are constantly pushing the envelope of their abilities and finding new ways to create music.

Some of them are influenced by other musicians, either their peers or musicians from the past but always find a way to make it their own.

I noticed something else – most of the Grammy winners thanked their teams – their producers, managers, band members and family. No one does this stuff alone. Their managers and producers give them the encouragement to push their skills and discover more about themselves and their music.

Business is the same. It is difficult to build a thriving business on your own. We either get stuck in our own, sometimes limited thinking. We don’t realize or value our talents because they come easy for us. We get stuck in constant learning rather than constant doing. Sound familiar?

Surrounding ourselves with a support system who lovingly push us out of the nest and hold us accountable to our dreams and vision is key. Moving out of your comfort zone is a process – you bump up against the edge of the zone and then you push against it. It gets easier with time. What was difficult to do last month, or last year is easier now. Sometimes we don’t stop, acknowledge and celebrate how far we have come.

Believe in your unique talents and vision, surround yourself with people who believe in your and who will – gently – push you out of the nest (or support you as you jump from the safety of the cliff into the unknown of your potential).

Are you standing on the edge, waiting for the right moment to jump in? Get support around you so you aren’t doing it alone.
